The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test or commonly known as the PSAT is one of the most essential validations to be taken by students during their high school education. Unlike the longer and more difficult SAT or the Scholastic Aptitude Test, PSAT is quite tolerable and much shorter. Plus, it doesn’t include the time-consuming essay. Preparing for the PSAT, however, should be taken with great significance as this can be utilized if you’re planning for a National Merit scholarship. Consequently, many students take the PSAT during their sophomore so that they get an idea of the exam. And unlike the SAT, the PSAT cannot be used for college admission.
PSAT
Since the PSAT is considered a requirement for the National Merit Scholarship, one must pass the PSAT/ NMSQT or Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Aside from the PSAT/ NMSQT (10th and 11th graders), there are other PSAT tests: the PSAT 8/9 (8th and 9th graders) and PSAT 10 (10th graders) ― both are almost similar to the PSAT/ NMSQT but provide a different focus for different year levels. Conversely, PSAT 8/9 and PSA 10 cannot be considered if they are vying for the National Merit Scholarship, but only the PSAT/ NMSQT which is taken during their junior year. But of course, all these PSAT tests are very much valued as means for your SAT preparation.
PSAT Official Practice Tests
One of the most effective ways to prepare the PSAT is to take the official practice tests offered by the College Board, a notable non-profit organization that binds students to college achievement and a wide range of opportunities. Taking a practice test helps you get ready for the test day, as well as polish those areas that need improvement. The good thing about these practice tests is that you can study at your own pace and score your own test. Not only that, it features almost the same questions, as well as classifications, including Math, Reading and Writing, and Language.
PSAT Preparation
Before you start taking the practice test, make sure you have the following: pencil, calculator, and timer. You can print the .pdf file, use a screen reader or listen to the .mp3 audio format. Just like the real test, time management is very important while taking the test, hence the timer. Also, you need to mark your final answer in the correct circle from the row of options. Since this is a practice test, it’s okay if you don’t get all answers correctly because you will not lose any points. Once you have answered all questions, don’t forget to make a run-through to check if you skip something. As to the scoring, do take into account that the College Board uses equating or converting your raw scores into scores on a particular score scale. So, for the practice tests, all you can verify are your raw score. Still, knowing your capacity even before the real PSAT is much useful and effective to polish your comprehension and skills.
